November 18 is what is considered as the birthday of the most famous mouse in the world, Mickey Mouse! Mickey Mouse made his debut in the animated short entitled Steamboat Willie at the Universal Colony Theater in New York City on November 18, 1928. An article in Variety magazine said this at the time, ” “Not the first animated cartoon to be synchronized with sound effects, but the first to attract favorable attention. It represents a high order of cartoon ingenuity, cleverly combined with sound effects. The union brought laughs galore. Giggles came so fast at the Colony, they were stumbling over each other.” Thankfully, Walt’s wife Lillian saved Mickey from being named ‘Mortimer”. She thought it was too pompous for a little mouse and chose the name Mickey which seemed more humble and appealing. Can you imagine if we were celebrating Mortimer’s birthday? Just think, we would never have been able to say, “M-I-C-K-E-Y M-O-U-S-E”! Yes, Walt. Your wife was right. 🙂
And now, 84 years later, people, including my young son and daughter enjoy the very same mouse named Mickey!
So from MamaMouse to you, dear Mickey… I hope you have a VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!
